Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes.  Always popular here with  the kids and often with friends who drop in.  Not too expensive either, and you can get them on the table in 30 minutes or less.

Ingredients:

1 lb. ground beef ($2.50 to $3.00)

1/2 to 1 chopped onion

1/2 to 1 chopped green pepper

1 small can tomato sauce ($0.33)

ketchup

buns.  (.99 to $3.00–hope you can find a good deal)

Brown your hamburger along with your onion, green pepper, and of course, salt and pepper.  When your hamburger is gently browned and the onions are tender, add the can of tomato sauce.  Add ketchup (and also bar b que sauce) until you get the “right” taste for you.  Simmer a bit then serve on your favorite buns.  Of course, we love whole wheat buns!  We serve our sloppy joes with a great veggie side–If Margaret has her say about it, it’s CORN.  Otherwise, I grab a couple bags of frozen green beans.  I love how kroger will put their bags of frozen veggies on sale for a $1 a bag.  I usually stock up.  That keeps the cost of this meal for our family under $7.  Just right!

About onlifeandbeans

I like to make the adventure taste good by cooking tasty, wholesome food. Most of what I've learned in cooking, I've picked up from cookbooks and lots of practice. (Thank you, Fannie Farmer, for the right start. ) I so appreciate cookbooks that tell how and why to do something; that's why I do the same for my readers. I want to know what is in my food. I want my family to sit down and share a meal together. I want our food to taste good. Home-cooking takes time, but it gives back rich dividends in budget minding, good health and familial love. One meal at a time.
